KYLE A - ON BEING A NEW HOME OWNER & THE "EMERGENCY FUND."

I think the home buyer education class should be required for anyone buying a house—people should just learn more. The emergency fund—that's what got me the most. In an apartment, you have a problem, you call the landlord. But now, going through that class, if the fridge goes out, having that emergency fund, you're okay—cause you never know what's going to happen.

I didn't even know if I could get a home. I was at work one day and heard a commercial on the radio. I called and made an appointment and told them 'I don't even know if I qualify.' A few days later, they called and said I was approved. We closed on the house on April first last year. I was afraid it might be an April Fool's Day joke. We were moved in by the end of the day. Having a yard is nice—we got a big old eight-foot round pool for the kids. Having a home is a symbol for how far I've come. "
